A swift response from the Johannesburg police saw an alleged robber arrested and charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Jeppe Police Station spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyayi, said officers received a call on 21 November from a complainant informing them about the whereabouts of one of his robbers.
The complainant was robbed of a firearm and money on 11 November and on 21 November he obtained information on the whereabouts of the suspect. “He then informed the police who then proceeded to the address in Jeppestown and found the suspect.
“They asked the suspect where the firearm was and he took it out and gave it to them and further admitted to robbing the complainant,” said Munyayi.
The initial incident on 11 November happened on the corner of Scott and Jules streets in Jeppestown while the complainant was busy putting wheel cabs on the taxi he was driving.
Munyayi said there was a female passenger seated in the front seat. When he heard her screaming, he looked and saw a man grabbing the Brazilian hair she was carrying.
“Before he could help her, he was surrounded by three men who grabbed him.
“They overpowered him and took his 9mm pistol Parabellum with 15 live rounds and R600 in cash, and ran away,” he said.
According to Munyani, a case was opened at Jeppe Police Station. He added that the firearm was recovered with its serial numbers still intact along with 14 live rounds.
The 26-year-old suspect was charged with armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and detained.
Munyayi said he is expected to appear in court soon adding that an investigation still continues and police are still searching for his accomplices.
