Johannesburg police shot dead an gun-wielding suspect after he apparently refused to give up his gun in Jeppestown along Wolhunter Street last weekend.
According to the Jeppe police, information was received by their officers about the suspect wielding a gun in the area and they followed the information.
The suspect was then spotted along the street and the officers approached and requested to search him but he refused, said the spokesperson for the police, Captain Richard Munyai.
The suspect, however, drew his pistol, pointing it at the police officers, threatening to shoot them, he said.
“One of the officers shot him and he fell down,” said Munyai.
“Paramedics were called to the scene and the suspect was declared dead on the scene. A 9mm pistol and an okapi knife were recovered.”

The serial numbers of the firearm are filed off, added Munyai.
A case of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as an inquest has been open for investigation.
Munyai said the firearm was taken for ballistic testing to establish if it has been used to commit any other crimes as well as to find its originality.
Police investigation still continues.
