WATCH: Kid Tini brings mental health and suicide to the fore in new music video
JOBURG – Kid Tini’s latest music video highlights challenges faced by SA youth.
With a gripping and shocking introduction, Cinga, Kid Tini’s latest music video is currently sitting on 130 000 views on YouTube.
The video highlights teenage pregnancy, the common challenge faced by South African youth. In the story narrated, the unfortunate outcomes of teen sex such as illegal abortions and suicide are highlighted as the story follows a young school girl whose life is in shambles after finding out that she was pregnant – she opts to go for a backstreet, illegal abortion – a decision that bears unfortunate consequences.
“Cinga was inspired by real-life events and personal experience. I mostly felt compelled to write it and put it out there because it speaks about things that we brush under the carpet as a society – things like suicide, teenage pregnancy and illegal abortions,” said Kid Tini.
With a large teenage and adolescent following, Kid Tini said he saw it important to share his story and have a teaching effect on the youth – an effect that will hopefully see them make better decisions in the future.
The socially-conscious single and video make a much-needed contribution on the awareness around mental health and suicide – positioning Kid Tini as a necessary and youthful voice in the conversations around combating youth suicides and mental health.
“The story revolves around things that happen, it’s not common for artists in SA to speak about these things – it’s not really the coolest thing to talk about. It’s the perfect time to do it and I’d like to be the pioneer,” said Kid Tini.
As much as the storyline is a bit controversial, the YouTube views and the response garnered point to the need for such subject matter as a way to channel mainstream content. A formula that sees the young muso turn into a more relatable entertainer who speaks to the daily pressures and struggles faced by people.
“It’s overwhelming actually. The love is incredible and I don’t think I’ve gotten any love of this magnitude with any other song. It’s thought-provoking and the kids are loving it,” he said.
