WATCH: Melusi Mhlungu’s viral Superbowl ad rakes up the views

JOBURG – Melusi Mhlungu’s hilarious frozen food ad has surpassed 15 million views on YouTube.

The Super Bowl, one of the United States’ biggest sporting events, had the sports world abuzz over the weekend with the New England Patriots coming out victorious after defeating the Los Angeles Rams.

For South Africa, the highlight of the sporting event was when Melusi Mhlungu’s ad about ‘food porn’ positioned itself as one of the contenders in the war for the best TV ads that were aired during the event.

“Whatever happens this Super Bowl weekend, I have a country that’s behind me and there is nothing bigger than that,” Mhlungi said in a tweet ahead of the Super Bowl.

According to Business Insider, advertising slots for the sporting event rake in a lot of money with some TV networks charging a staggering R68 million for a 30-second slot.

Mhlungu’s ‘Food Porn’ ad, written for Kraft-Heinz’ Devour frozen food has since gone viral and has surpassed 15 million views on YouTube. The ad features a woman who’s irritated with her partner’s fixation with Devour’s frozen food instant meals. She considers the instant meals ‘food porn’ and tries to add a little zest with a candle-lit home-cooked dinner, however, his addiction to the frozen instant meals persists.
