Eden Road ‘gas’ explosion worries councillor Fisher

BRAMLEY – The incident occurred for the second time in three months and the City has not investigated and determined the cause.

An explosion that left a pavement badly damaged near homes along Eden Road in Bramley remains a mystery with authorities still doubting that methane gas was the cause of the blast.

The incident, which was the front page story in the North Eastern Tribune, Week ending 8 February, has left many people speculating what the cause of the explosion could have been.

Ward 74 councillor, David Fisher, said he was worried about the incident.

Fisher, who happened to be in the neighbourhood on the day of the blast (26 January), said he went to the site of the explosion.

“I was at a voting station on that day as it was a registration week and when I got there I found that the pavement was badly damaged from the explosion,” he said.

“I then contacted JRA [Johannesburg Roads Agency] who then attended to the matter and the rubble was cleared. However, this still remains a mystery, even I cannot understand what the cause of the explosion could be.”

A resident, Tony Smith, who notified the authorities soon after the incident including Egoli Gas, a company that deals with piped natural gas infrastructure, claimed that there was a smell of gas after the explosion.

Fisher, however, said when he arrived there was no smell of gas.

Egoli Gas denied that it was their gas pipelines that had caused the explosion and told Tribune that a team of their service provider visited the site to investigate if it was gas from their pipes that had caused the blast.

Egoli Gas managing director, Monde Tyusha, said there was no report of leaking gas at the site.

“There was no determination of the cause because there was no gas detected in the chamber where the incident occurred. So, the explosion was not from an Egoli Gas installation,” he claimed.

Fisher confirmed that there was no investigation underway to determine the cause even though Smith told Tribune that this had occurred for the second time in three months.
