SA’s sharpest rappers win big at second annual Verse of the Year Awards

JOBURG – These are all the winners from the second annual Verse of the Year Awards.

13 February saw the celebration of some of SA’s top lyricists at the second annual Verse of the Year Awards (VOTY) held in Braamfontein. Founded by
hip-hop veteran, Stogie T, the event celebrated artists who delivered the best verses over 2018.

“Some of the biggest rappers are lyricists in the local market right now. Don’t get it confused just because they know how to make a nice song,” said Slikour.

The awards were attended by over 150 industry leaders, music executives, artists, and media, the fun-filled intimate event was a true celebration of hip-hop. Guests included VOTY judges Stogie T, Zubz, Sabelo Mkhabela, and Mercia Tucker as well as familiar faces such as DJ Sabby, Helen Herimbi, Azizar Mosupi, Ninel Musson and Sandile Ntshingila.

Last year’s breakthrough act and former soccer player, Touchline took home the Hennessy People’s Choice Award with over 700 public online votes from a total of 4 000 people using the categories hashtag.

“I really appreciate that we’re actually being seen and people are waking up to the message and what we have to say,” Touchline said.

Stogie T closed the evening’s proceedings with a shout out to every artist featured in this year’s VOTY.

“These awards were created to salute hip-hop and to celebrate skill and the artform of MC’ing. As always, the magic continues on SlikourOnLife with the monthly Verse of the Month which will resume next month. And of course, see you all next year at the 3rd annual Verse of the Year Awards,” he said.

Nasty C took top honours this year after he came out number one for his verse on Boity’s hit single Wuz Dat.

We thought that Nasty’s verse was really contemporary and spoke to this time but it has lines in it that could really impress any MC from any generation, that’s one of the things that’s difficult to do,” Stogie T said.
