#ICYMI: AKA steps up for students with R100 000 donation
JOBURG – AKA donates R100 000 and in solidarity with #WitsHungerStrike.
The levels keep getting higher and in case you have not noticed, AKA continues to gain positive traction as he has once again stepped up for a great cause, the #WitsHungerStrike.
“I’ve been following the saga unfolding at Wits and I feel like something needs to be done for these kids. These are the very same people we ask for support from when we as public figures need something, yet our indifference and silence in times like these is deafening,” AKA said,
On Sunday, 10 February, the Supamega announced that he has donated R100 000 to the Wits SRC Humanitarian Fund in an attempt to address the plight raises by students during #WitsHungerStrike protest action.
“I know that won’t fix all the issues facing our students but I think it’s a start,” said AKA.
The #WitsHungerStrike saw students at the University of the Witwatersrand embark on a hunger strike at Solomon Mahlangu House over the past week in order to raise awareness on issues relating to accommodation, registration fees, and financial exclusion.
“I hope this will make other celebrities, private citizens and leaders, stop and think about what we can do to help these young people. This is not a political initiative, this is about demonstrating that we are the only ones who can find solutions for our own problems,” he said.
AKA is no stranger to student politics and activism as he not only voiced his support of #FeesMustFall movement in its beginning stages but also took to the streets to protest with the student community when the movement set out to champion the realisation of free higher education.
