MEC Ismail Vadi condemns unlawful blockading of Joburg CBD streets by taxi drivers

JOBURG – MMC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi urges taxi drivers to stay away from illegal actions.

The MMC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi condemned the unlawful blockading of the Johannesburg CBD on 12 March by a group of taxi drivers calling themselves the Alliance for Transformation for All.

“Their reckless action is unfortunate and totally unacceptable,” said Vadi.

Vadi threatened to close Nancefield Dube West Taxi Association (Nanduwe) and Witwatersrand Taxi Association (Wata) taxi ranks and routes in Soweto following a spate of violence between the two associations.

“The traffic havoc caused in the city centre by a handful of uninformed taxi drivers is totally unacceptable and must be condemned by all,” added Vadi.

“Such reckless actions to the severe disadvantage of tens of thousands of people in the city centre will clearly not contribute to a speedy and peaceful resolution of the conflict between Wata and Nanduwe.”

The Department of Roads and Transport said no decision had been made yet to close any taxi rank or route in Soweto. It added that the MMC was still considering representations made by legal representatives for Wata and Nanduwe to him. The MMC has urged taxi owners not to allow their drivers to engage in illegal actions.
