Scrabble lovers are in for a treat as the South African National Scrabble Championships head to Huddle Park Golf Club, Linksfield on 23 to 24 March.
The new chairperson of Scrabble Gauteng Andrew Goldberg shared that they were trying their level best to revive Scrabble in Gauteng. “This board game with words has great educational value, a competitive ethos and stimulates creative thinking and strategic problem-solving.”
Goldberg explained that the championships which are usually held in Cape Town and Durban every year are now coming to Gauteng. “In the 90s Scrabble was a well-played sport as we had about 5 000 members competing in the championships but now we have about 500 members.”
He explained that there were players from eight-years-old, to those in their 80s, from all walks of life. “We have students, doctors, lawyers, accountants, judges and housewives. The game is extremely popular in Africa as Nigeria has produced a world champion already.”
He explained that the championship has three divisions which are social, masters and nationals. “We are expecting well over 40 people as eight people will be participating in the social division, the Top 20 in the masters division and 30 in the nationals.”
Goldberg concluded that the first three people to contact him will get to join and play for free in the socials division. “Not only will they get to play for free, but they will also get a complimentary meal as well as stand a chance to win prizes for that specific division.”
