Scrabble fanatics compete in the the South African National Scrabble Championships
LINKSFIELD – People of all ages played against each other in the various divisions.
Scrabble fanatics recently went head-to-head at the SA National Scrabble Championships at Huddle Park Golf Club, Linksfield to uncover this year’s undisputed champion.
The championship saw people of all ages playing against each other in the various divisions.
According to the chairperson of Scrabble Gauteng Andrew Goldberg, this year’s tournament showed that the game is relaxing yet competitive. “As much as the game is competitive. It is also friendly as we have people meeting together who are friends – there’s just a great atmosphere when we play the game.”
Goldberg explained that the players thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and Harry Wiggins was noted as the champion.
Vice-chairperson of the Gauteng Association of Scrabble Player, Steven Gruzd explained that Scrabble is a wonderful way for children to learn dictionary skills which sparks their confidence and creative thinking. “The games our members play are between young and old.”
He explained that for a long time Scrabble was thought of by many as ‘very white and middle-aged’ but now they are seeing more diverse interest. “This is why we would like to take Scrabble to different communities as we will try to get other provinces involved. We want to teach young people about the game.”
“We love the game so we want to give back by teaching schoolchildren about the game. The schools’ tournament will take place on 15 September at Parktown Boys and we want at least 100 boys competing in the tournament. Prior to the tournament, Andrew and I will offer to coach on a Sunday, or maybe an evening or even lunchtime depending where the school is and we will come and help the children out.”
Gruzd added that this was applicable to schoolchildren from the Johannesburg area.
