Youth not sold on parties’ promises

As many youths are set to make their mark for the first time in the upcoming national elections, a student of Rosebank College, Sivanesan Ramsamy shared his reasons why he would not be voting.

“I do not think anything is going to change because all the parties are the same,” he said. “They all giving us ideas on how they will change but they are not acting on how they plan to change.”

He explained that from an average citizen’s point of view, he had noted a lot of poverty, inequality and sexism that were pushing the country way below third world status. “The party that people need to vote for needs to look into giving decent health care for disadvantaged people in communities and granting children with good quality education.”

Studying a Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching, Ramsamy said all the parties that were currently campaigning were selling people dreams. “I believe what most of these parties want is power and once they have it they will forget all the things they promised while they were campaigning.”

The 19-year-old added that he was studying to become a teacher because he wanted to educate his learners on the importance of looking at different points of view and not just to take people’s word for it. “I want them to broaden their minds and think of ways that will help better them as individuals who will be great citizens of the country one day.

“Greed led us to the state we are as a country today and no party, according to me, shows that they genuinely have the thoughts and needs of the people in the country [at heart], hence I will not be voting in the coming national elections.”
