Vodka wars, premium champagne and colourful gin – SA celebs secure the alcohol brand endorsement bag

JOBURG – Bonang Matheba, AKA, Cassper Nyovest, and more celebs align themselves with alcohol brands.

A big part (or perk) of being a celebrity has always been the free goodies and endorsements that come along with stardom. Celebs already make a considerable amount of money off their art and the extra cash raked in from these brand endorsements is the icing on the cake.

Endorsements from alcohol brands are on the rise and have been a popular trend in SA’s celebville. With celebs aligning themselves with alcohol brands stretching across cognac, wine, champagne and even beer, it is clear that there are benefits to tapping into this market.

Bonang Matheba leads the pack in this trend following the launch of her very own Méthode Cap Classique (MCC), House of Bonang. The starlet’s MCC range sold out on the day it hit shelves and has been trending since.

Known for their never-ending conflict, AKA and Cassper Nyovest have also taken their beef into the alcohol market with AKA scoring and releasing a vodka range with Cruz Vodka while Cassper Nyovest continues to align himself with Ciroc Vodka. The rap virtuosos continue to taunt each other as seen in Cassper Nyovest throwing shade at AKA’s watermelon flavoured Cruz Vodka in Monate Mpolaye and AKA clapping back on numerous occasions even during his Comedy Central Roast.

On the other end of the alcoholic beverages spectrum, Mi Casa frontmant, J’Something recently launched his own craft gin range, Jin Gin, alongside local gin experts, Craft Link who also created the popular Ginologist Gin range. Being a gin fan for years, J’Something said he wanted to create a high-quality gin that had something new and interesting to offer the market. The gin range comes in three variants, including rooibos, orange and honey; tomato and sweet piquante peppers and honey and olives – and was inspired by the muso’s Portuguese and South African heritage.

Premuim cognac brand Courvoisier is known for being on the forefront of the celeb-alcohol trend. The brand recently added three new artists to their bill after Yanga Chief, Nadia Nakai and Prince Kaybee joined the Courvoisier family.  The brand has also seen the likes of Matheba, David Tlale and Anatii take on the brand ambassador role.
