Newly launched Metro police CCTV Response Unit already shows signs of success

BRAAMFONTEIN – After being alerted by CCTV camera operators, undercover officers stopped an attempted hijacking in Braamfontein.

The Metro Police launched the CCTV Response Unit on 14 May to tackle the increase of crime in the city of Johannesburg and the unit is showing signs of success just two weeks later.

Spokesperson for Metro police Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the new unit was notified of an attempted hijacking on 25 May just before 1pm by CCTV camera operators.

“[The camera operators identified] three male suspects at the corner of Rissik Street and De Korte Street in Braamfontein. Undercover officers arrested all three suspects as they were about to hijack an unsuspected motorist.”

The suspects were in possession of an illegal firearm and were arrested immediately and detained at the Hillbrow Police Station.
