Kew residents praised for helping Bramley police fight crime

KEW – Another victim was sleeping in her cottage room when she heard someone touching her and screamed for help.

Kew residents have been praised for their efforts to fight crime in the Johannesburg north-eastern suburb.

The community helped the police to apprehend three suspects for allegedly committing crimes in the area in separate incidents.

According to Bramley police spokesperson, Captain Molefe Mogodi, two suspects were arrested after allegedly robbing a victim while another was arrested for attempting to rob a victim in a cottage in the area.

Mogodi said on 26 May, a victim was robbed by two men while on his way home from church.

It is alleged that the victim was alone when the two men, who were unknown to the community, approached him from behind, Mogodi said

“One of them allegedly drew a knife and threatened to stab him, while the other grabbed [him] by the neck and began searching him,” Mogodi added.

“The suspects eventually got away with money and a cellular phone belonging to the victim. The community, who happened to notice the robbery, wasted no time to help the victim. They gave chase until they apprehended [one of] the suspects.”

The search continued for the second suspect who was subsequently found hiding in a yard, added Mogodi.

The suspects were then handed over to the Bramley police and the items belonging to the victim were recovered as well as the knife.

Both face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of stolen property.

In a separate incident, Mogodi said a 35-year-old man was arrested after he had broken into a cottage in Kew with the intention to commit robbery. It was alleged that the complainant was sleeping when she was woken up by someone touching her.

“The complainant screamed for help and the neighbours came to her rescue and apprehended the suspect,” Mogodi said.

He was then handed over to the Bramley police.

“We appreciate the cooperation we get from the community… together we can make Sector 2 of Bramley policing precinct a safer place to live.

“We shall continue to serve and protect you with pride,” concluded Mogodi.
