The Johannesburg High Court has sentenced Vincent Sicelo Sikhakhane to 15 years in prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 29 May.
This is in relation to an incident that happened on 23 March last year, where Sikhakhane was found in a possession of an illegal gun by the Jeppe police.
According to the spokesperson for the Jeppe police Captain Richard Munyayi, the police were on duty when they got a tip-off about a shooting at George Goch informal
settlement. On their arrival, Munyayi said they spotted a man who, when he saw them, went into a shop and pretended to buy something. The police ordered him to stand still and searched him, Munyayi said.
“Upon searching him, they found a silver revolver 38 Special and when they asked him to produce a license, he failed to do so,” said Munyayi. “They arrested him and charged him with possession of an unlicensed firearm and he was detained at the Jeppe Police Station.
The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Matome Seshoka and Sikhakhane made several appearances in court until the magistrate found him guilty and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment.”
He will serve his sentence without any leave to appeal or parole, added Munyayi.
The station commander of Jeppe Police Station, Brigadier Wiseman Mthembu, has expressed his gratitude to the investigating officer, adding that this is one their success stories.
“I’m pleased with the outcome of the case and the way the investigating officer worked tirelessly to make sure Sikhakhane was found guilty,” said the senior police officer.
He said the sentence will serve as a deterrent for other criminals.
