Community and businesses help the Gazette, help Sunshine Centre for Mandela Day
CRAIGHALL – We need your help to help make the lives of the children at Sunshine Centre more enjoyable.
The Rosebank Killarney Gazette under the Caxton Cares banner is adopting the Sunshine Centre Craighall for Nelson Mandela Day (18 July) and we need your help.
The centre on Waterfall Avenue in Craighall, is run for children with disabilities and focuses on Early Childhood Development (ECD). It is supported by the Departments of Social Development and Health. Although the centre is a non-profit organisation, parents do pay a small amount in school fees which are used for operational costs. It caters mainly for children with disabilities but they do include those without.
Social worker and centre manager Boitumelo Ntamela said, “Most of the children are from poor backgrounds, so we have to fundraise whenever we can.”
The centre is in desperate need of classroom makeovers which include repainting and carpet cleaning. The Gazette is calling on any sponsors who are willing to donate their time or product to help us achieve our goal. Email the editor at ashtynm@caxton.co.za if your company is interested.

Community members are encouraged to help with their general wish list and donations can be made at Caxton Local Media (386 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall Park) at the newspaper building during the week from 8.30am to 4pm.
Wishlist:
- Therapeutic equipment and toys: Lava lamps, cause-and-effect toys (toys that make sounds), sensory garden plants, wind chimes, walkers (four wheels), musical instructions, wooden puzzles, stacking toys, peg boards (large and small), threading toys
- Toiletries: Wet wipes, rubber gloves, tissues, arnica oil, aqueous cream/petroleum jelly, toilet paper, liquid soap /handwash
- Groceries: Pasta (all kinds except lasagne), dry foods, sugar, samp, packets of soup, milk, jam, peanut butter, oats, mealie meal, rice, chicken and meat, fresh fruits and vegetables
- Cleaning: Pinegel, all-purpose cleaner, dish-washing liquid, bleach, dishcloths, black plastic bags, air freshener, scouring pad/sponges
- Stationery: Printer paper, coloured paper, glue (bucket)
Together, you the readers and the Gazette can bring about positive change through our actions, by doing the right thing, and helping others, even when faced with formidable challenges.
