Joburg City’s insourced cleaners to be made permanent employees
JOBURG – The cleaners are set to start as permanent employees from 1 September.
The City of Johannesburg announced some exciting news on 8 July that 1 500 insourced cleaners would be made permanent employees for the City from 1 September this year.
Addressing some of the cleaners, Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba said, “All of you cleaners of the City of Johannesburg working with the tenderpreneurs, you will now be employees of the City of Johannesburg. ”
The City announced in April that they were in the final stages of insourcing security guards and cleaners as part of their programme that would put an end to politically awarded tenders to security companies and cleaning companies.
Mashaba said they would receive appointment letters by 15 August and shared more good news. “What has never happened or seen in this country, you will get an increase of 50 per cent of your salary which will include funeral cover, pension fund and medical aid.”

Mashaba tweeted, “What a fantastic day when we are able to give some of our most vulnerable employees stability.”
