19 July: 969 Festival

Wits Theatre’s 969 Festival celebrates its 16th birthday with a line-up of 14 productions in dance, music, drama and comedy. This year, Wits Theatre’s 969 Festival celebrates its 16th birthday and runs from 18 – 28 July at the Wits Theatre in Braamfontein.

20 July: McCoy Mrubata at 60 – The Complete Story

This year marks the second edition of the Market Theatre’s Jazzy July programme that was launched in 2018. Jazzy July dabbles across different genres and takes audiences down memory lane with some of South Africa’s popular sounds throughout the evening. Jazz lovers can look forward to award-winning jazzist, McCoy Mrubata, who will celebrate his 60th birthday and mark 30 years as recording artist in a spectacular concert at the Market Theatre.

20 July: Bokke vs Aus Bottomless Beer

The Springboks are playing the Aussies at Ellis Park, building up to the world cup later this year. To support The Boks Mad Giant will have a bottomless beer day. Gobble all the beer you can for only R240.

21 July: Nise – the Heart of Madness

As part of the Brazilian Film Festival, The Bioscope is set to screen Nise – the Heart of Madness on 21 July. The film is based on the life of psychiatrist Nise da Silveira, a pioneer of occupational therapy in Brazil, the film is set in 1944, when she refuses to use electroshock and lobotomy in the treatment of schizophrenics the movie is not only a history class about the struggles faced by a brilliant woman in a system dominated by men but but also a true event in which art appears as the means of verbalization for the recovery of our stability. Entry to the screening is free.

21 July: Buskaid Ensemble at the Linder Auditorium

Join the Buskaid Ensemble at the Linder Auditorium on Sunday 21 July to hear the first movement of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachmusik, Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs) by Pablo de Sarasate, featuring young Buskaid virtuoso violinist Mzwandile Twala, followed by the focal point of the afternoon – a very unusual performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in which four different Buskaid solo violinists will be featured, two past members and two present.
