A unique way to celebrate Nelson Mandela
LYNDHURST – As Nelson International Day is celebrated around the country, Lyndhurst Primary School joined the party.
Lyndhurst Primary School principal Wellington Shaw commended Mustek Limited Group for donating equipment to the school worth more than R670 000 in the spirit of giving as it celebrated Nelson Mandela Day.
There was a hive of activities on 18 July when school teachers, members of the school governing body (SGB) and City Year South Africa service leaders painted the school hall and engaged in other activities.
Members of the SGB also donated sanitary pads on behalf of the parents. The sanitary pads are expected to help about 360 girls from the school.
Principal Shaw said they planned their activities in a manner that would ensure sustainability and improve teaching and learning in their school. “Mustek donated toner, printers, paper and laptops that will go a long way to improve teaching and learning in our school,” he said.
He said they were also use the day to prepare for the school’s centenary celebration to be held towards the end of the year. “We are one of the oldest school in the area and we are looking for people to sponsor this big event,” he said.
The SGB secretary Noluthando Mdludlu said the equipment donation would go a long way as they are trying to make the school become an e-learning school.
She indicated that it is their dream to become a paperless school by 2021 which focuses mainly on mathematics, English and sciences subjects. “We will like to get more sponsors who will support our dream,” said Mdludlu.
One of the City Year service leaders who are located at the school, Cephorah Munangai said the painting was their way of honouring Nelson Mandela.
A group of these service leaders who act as teachers’ aids, help learners with extra lessons and remedial concepts after school. When classes are in progress, they assist teachers to help easier their work in the classroom. “Today we decided to paint to honour Nelson Mandela,” she said.
