DA wants clarity regarding issues of safety certificate at Nokuthula LSEN School

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province said they will write a letter to the MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi to get clarity regarding the occupational safety certificate that has not been renewed at Nokuthula LSEN School in Lyndhurst.
This was after the party’s shadow MEC of Education Khume Ramulifho paid an unannounced visit to conduct an oversight at the school that caters for children with special needs.
Ramulifho, who was denied permission to conduct oversight at the school with members of the media by the school management, said the report that was presented before the committee in a meeting held in Randburg on 9 July 2019 revealed that a temporary occupational safety certificate at the school expired at the end of June this year and has not been renewed.
He said it was unacceptable that a school that cost about R300 million of the state money was not fully functioning after it took the department almost a year to open the school after they had finished building it.
“This is a concern to us as the Democratic Alliance. You can’t spent a lot of money building something and not get value out of it. That is something we really need to take up. It’s unfortunate that we could not engage with the school leadership who said they were not allowed to engage with us regarding school issues,” Ramulifho said
The spokesperson in the Department of Infrastructure Development in the province Bongiwe Gambu said,”The school was issued with a temporary occupation certificate on 11 July this year. This certificate is valid for 180 days while in the meantime the department was working on a permanent one,” she said.
