Soup and sarmies for the soul
NORWOOD – In the spirit of giving and celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day, the Union of Jewish Women prepared sandwiches for distribution.
The Norwood Mall was abuzz on 18 July when hundreds of volunteers gathered at the centre to make sandwiches, jam-packed with either peanut butter, jam, chocolate spread or polony which was then distributed to charities, hospitals and the displaced around Johannesburg.
About 4 356 sandwiches were made and individually packaged for distribution and about 7 886 cups of soup were handed out together with the sandwiches in cups decorated by volunteers as young as two years old.

The Union of Jewish Women organised the event and said in a statement that it didn’t matter what your race, religion, age or ethnicity was, “All that mattered was that we as South Africans came together to make a difference in our beautiful country, we call home.”
The soup and sandwiches were distributed to Cadena, Chayil Foundation, Children of Fire, Johannesburg Girls Preparatory School, Mitzvah School, Open Disclosure Foundation, ORT SA, Project Brave, Princess Alice Adoption Home, Rivers Foundation, UJW Alexandra Aftercare and Feeding Scheme, UJW Hillbrow Soup Kitchen and to new moms at clinics around Soweto as well as to homeless individuals, cleaners and security guards within the area.
