Shekhinah’s Rose Fest to foster unity among women in the entertainment industry

JOBURG – Shekhinah’s all-woman Rose Fest line-up a step in the right direction at establishing women as central voices in the music industry.

Celebrating the success of Shekhinah’s award-winning debut, Rose Gold, Rose Fest has not only broken the glass ceiling by being the first festival to have an all-woman line-up but has established Shekhinah as a brand challenging the entertainment industry’s status quo by creating a space of self-empowerment and celebration.

Connecting both National Women’s Day and the women empowerment themes of her album, the fest creates a space to showcase the talented women who are rapidly making their voices heard in South Africa’s music industry.

“I want to make sure that females are being acknowledged. This is just the time for women to headline and take the shine for one day,” Shekhinah said.

The star-studded line-up features Sho Madjozi, Simmy, Holly Ray, DJ Doowop, DJ Zinhle, Rowlene, Moonchild Sanelly, Busiswa, Melo B Jones and DBN Gogo who were personally selected by Shekhinah.

“There’s still a lot of ladies that I would’ve loved to put on the line-up. I would’ve loved to have Amanda Black, Lady Zamar and Thabsie, but, hopefully I can have them join us in Durban,” she said.

Shekhinah said she hoped that industry would offer support structures for women and create platforms that will level the playing field between all artists. Her sentiments are in line with her partnership with Nedbank’s Unlocked.Me. The partnership sees Nedbank use the opportunity to produce a platform to create awareness of the issues faced by young women.

“It’s not very often that you find a financial services company partnering with a music concert of this nature. What better way is there to celebrate young women then being a part of an initiative in Women’s Month that is headlined by all-female artists? Our partnership with Shekhinah is perfectly aligned with our youth-focused banking solution, Unlocked.Me,” said Bridget Nkandu, Nedbank’s Youth Segment executive.

Rose Fest takes place on 9 August at the Nasrec Expo Centre and will be set against the outdoor and colourful backdrop of a carnival atmosphere, the micro-festival will celebrate women blooming and growing into formidable forces in the industry.
