Church feeds the homeless

BRAMLEY – The Mother's Union from St Catherine's Anglican Church continues to help the homeless people in the Bramley area.

The Mother’s Union of the St Catherine’s Anglican Church in Bramley gathered at the Bramley Police Station on Saturday 17 August and cooked food for the homeless.

This is one of many initiatives by the church to help communities in its area.

From time to time the church stretches itself a little further by giving to the community around it. They gave a meal to the disadvantaged community members in Bramley.

Nombulelo Thabane said once in four months, they cook for the homeless and were hoping to increase the number with the help of business people who sponsor the event.

She said it is their church’s vision to help the community as their motto states, ‘We exist to equip Christ-followers to serve within the community, allowing us to work together efficiently and gracefully as we respond to God’s presence in our lives, growing and developing continuously into Christ’s image’.

Their union’s objectives are to maintain the fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service as well as promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.

“These can only be implemented in the communities we live in. The social ills around us need a lot of attention. We can just do our bit to reach out in ways that we can,” she said.

She said the homeless or street community are also created in the image of God. “They are like me and you but have encountered challenges and for some reason have resorted to living in this way. All this is prayer in action.

“They too tell us it pleases them to see they are recognised as human beings.”

The Mother’s Union also thanked and acknowledged Food Lovers’ Eatery in Braamfontein, Fruit and Vegetable Basket Shop in Lyndhurst, Pick n Pay in Norwood and Fournos Bakery in Benmore Gardens for supporting the initiative.
