Matthew Mole continues eclectic blend of music in new album

JOBURG – Matthew Mole’s ‘Ghost’ album contains Matthew’s eclectic blend of folk, electronica undertones and positive vibes.

Matthew Mole’s anticipated third album, Ghost, has finally hit the shelves following a launch event in Joburg last week.  The launch boasted a thrilling line-up of activities, including a show by Matthew, who performed several new songs from the album, as well as old favourites such as Take Yours, I’ll Take Mine, Run and Holding On, and a Q&A session hosted by 94.7 Breakfast Club presenter, Frankie du Toit.

One of the highlights of the evening was undoubtedly the photo booth – designed to recreate the kitchen scene from Matthew’s video for Let Me – where attendees could take pictures with live snakes on the table. Four super fans also got to memorialise the event by getting limited edition tattoos of Olly, the quirky ghost that graces Matthew’s new album cover, courtesy tattoo artists at Fallen Heroes.

The album contains Matthew’s eclectic blend of folk, electronica undertones and positive vibes and the inspiration behind it, he said, was overcoming all sorts of difficulties. It is also what inspired the album’s title.

“The songs on this album represent fighting difficult situations in life. A lot of the difficulty comes down to fear or insecurity. The ghost represents those insecurities. It is something that intimidates us when we feel most vulnerable, but which ultimately has no power over us because we know that things will get better,” Mole said.

Mole wrote all the songs himself – with the help of Josh Klynsmith’s magic ear on two of the tracks – and the album was recorded in Cape Town, Johannesburg and London over the course of a year. He admited that the album was different to anything he has ever done.

“But it is the best music I have ever written, and I believe that there is a message in the songs that anyone can relate to,” he said.

The performer said he found it difficult to pinpoint a favourite track.

“It takes a lot to write a song. I would love to think that every song on Ghost is the best, because I put the same amount of thought and effort into each one,” Mole said.
