Parkview Senior School (PVS) won the Kids’ Lit Quiz which was held on 10 February at St Johns’ College in Houghton. According to teacher, librarian and webmaster at PVS, Melanie Hall, the quiz is held annually by Wayne Mills, an expert in children’s literature from New Zealand.
“This is an international quiz, which Wayne holds in various parts of New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Canada, the United States, Nigeria, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. The teams answer 100 questions in 10 categories in each round and they are not all easy, by any means,” Hall described.
She added that the school’s amazing team consists of Brendan Hope in Grade 7, Emma Morgan-Allais and Cara Moore in Grade 6, and Solomon Plagerson in Grade 5. Hall said they were tied for first place with The King’s School Robin Hills, and then the PVS team won by answering the tie-breaker question.
The teacher said they won R1 000 and will be going forward to the South African finals to be held at Roedean on 29 February. Hall said, “What a wonderful achievement! ‘Readers are leaders!’ Thank you to their parents for encouraging a culture of reading, as two of the team members are siblings of previous PVS Kids’ Lit Quiz members.”
She added that the world finals will be held in New Zealand mid-year, “So let’s hope that they win the South African round! Congratulations Brendan, Cara, Emma and Solomon! We are exceptionally proud of you!”
The school will be having their open day on 2 March.
