Golf for the girls at Houghton
HOUGHTON – Women have a blast at Houghton Golf Club's latest Ladies Open.
It was as much about the friendships made and memories shared, as the golf, at the latest Ladies Open at Houghton Golf Club.
The four-ball alliance event takes place every month and allows women of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to play on one of the finest courses around, whether they are members of the club or not.
And so it was on a cool and cloudy 12 March that about 60 women made their way around the 18-hole course, driving, putting, smiling and laughing their way through each hole.
Whenever there was a miss-hit, no one criticised. Whenever someone played a great stroke it was applauded by the onlookers. But most of all, the usual banter and joking around found on every golf course played its part in the high spirits of the day.
Even the geese and other waterbirds were chirpy as they watched on from the dams.
“I want women to see what a lovely course we have and how we have such a vibrant women’s section,” said Houghton’s women’s club captain, Stephanie Weil.
“It is the most wonderful bunch of women, and many of them are young. We feel like a family and love having new people.”
Weil added that most of the women who played, whether members or not, were career women and could identify with each other.
“We promote equality between everyone and there is definitely an opportunity for networking with people.”
The Ladies Open is on the first Thursday of each month and Weil invited anyone interested to sign up.
