Uitkoms Home for Girls will not be open for visits on Mandela Day

Uitkoms Home for Girls will not be welcoming volunteers this Mandela Day and has instead asked for donations to help the girls stay warm this winter.
A statement released by the Observatory home asked the community for 20 pairs of warm socks, 20 pairs of warm slippers (sizes four to seven) and 20 warm blankets for its teenage girls. Alternatively, people are encouraged to give R67, R670 or R6 700 instead of spending 67 minutes at the home. There is also a list of groceries, toiletries and cleaning materials the home is in need of.
These items include but are not limited to rice, sugar, cooking oil, oats, pasta, corn flakes, stamp mealies, soup, dishwashing liquid, sanitiser, bleach, refuse bags, toilet paper and flu medication.
A separate Mandela Day wishlist includes a new or pre-loved smart TV, paint (the home asks anyone interested in donating this to contact them about the colours required), printer cartridges, A4 printing paper, and funds for vehicle maintenance and gas. “Research has shown that giving makes us far happier than receiving,” the statement read.”Thus, in a way, we are actually being both selfish and selfless by giving to others. Numerous studies have shown that giving to others or to charity will put a much bigger smile on your face and these days we can all do with more smiles.”
Items can be delivered to 1140 St George’s Road, Observatory, any time between 8am and 4pm.
