The now-retired resident together with her late parents and late brother were Parkhurst residents since 1959. Badger had been back living in Parkhurst for the past 22 years to care for her dad until his passing.

Badger shared the following message to her father who died on 4 September 2017:

“’Oom’ Rassie van der Merwe was well-known and well-loved by his community of residents, shopkeepers and others in Parkhurst. The one pinnacle that stood out always was that he was always courteous, friendly, kind to everyone, friend and foe. And, being a deaf person and yet sociably interacting with everyone, was the other high point that made him a favourite person treasured by all.”
