Craftsman seeks support

Having moved his business to Craighall Park three months ago, a wire bead art artist hopes for residents’ support.

William Chirumbwana who sells his art work at a spot by the blue bridge at Braamfontein Spruit said he started the craft 10 years ago.

“I make different types of animals, birds and cars. Some customers make orders of certain things they would like made. Business is good but I am looking for a nice place where I can do my business properly. The place I am at is good but not suitable. I am looking for support from most local people,” said Chirumbwana.

He said he taught himself how to craft and along the way other people would give him ideas on what to craft. “When crafting I use wire and beads which I buy from the hardware.

“The time taken to make the pieces is determined by the size of the item. Some items are complicated while some not so much. A small elephant for instance can take a day to make.

“If a customer orders something specific then I ask my guys to help out and we make a division of labour so as to supply the client in time.”

He added that a much more complicated item would take him two to three days if working alone. The sculptor said that the way they sculpt the items as artists is different.

Chirumbwana who commutes from Joburg every day said the item prices range from R100 which is for the small items to R250 which is for the bigger items. “I hope people will come and support my business as I put in efforts to make an honest living.”
