Locals perform well at Liebenburgsvlei River Race
PARKTOWN – Despite the long journey to the river, Gauteng paddlers enjoyed the exciting white water rapids and fast flow of clean, clear water through the farmlands of the Free State.
King Edward VII School learner Harry Edgar finished first in the U18 division at the Standard Bank One Day Liebenburgsvlei River Race on 21 November.
The event started at the Reitz Water Treatment Centre and finished at Tweeling. The Liebenbergsvlei River continues to flow towards Frankfort and empties into the Vaal Dam.
Despite the long journey on the river, Gauteng paddlers enjoyed the exciting white water rapids and fast flow of clean, clear water through the farmlands of the Free State.
Harry completed the event in 02:26:00 as the 31st single kayaker to cross the finish line. Harry was introduced to the sport a few years ago by river coach and safety officer Jennie Dallas and since then he has completed the 240km Virtual Berg Challenge over a four-day period at Emmarentia Dam – a feat that would deter most experienced paddlers.
On the other side of the boat-sized scale, Parktown residents Alex Roberts and Marco Magni and their teammate Ryan Rodda finished as the first K3 in 02:04:00 as the first sub-veteran age category (35–39 years).
