Guild Cottage reflects on highs and lows
Ngwenya added that the coronavirus had brought a huge strain on the cottage, limiting their fundraising drives.
The executive director of Guild Cottage Celiwe Ngwenya said the lockdown had been a difficult time for the girls at the home and fundraising for the organisation.
The cottage functions as a home for sexually abused girls.
Ngwenya said, “Despite Covid-19 causing a strain on the country’s economy, we, however, had organisations/ trusts/ foundations whose support has enabled us to continue the work we do for the children.
“As an example, while most struggled with homeschooling, we were able to have the girls pursuing their studies virtually. We were also able to safeguard the girls’ health.”
Ngwenya added that the coronavirus had brought a huge strain on the cottage, limiting their fundraising drives.
Apart from the fact that the lockdown weighed heavily on the girls, no visitors were allowed at Guild Cottage. The girls did, however, speak to their loved ones telephonically.
Ngwenya said some of the items on the Guild Cottage wish list included summer pyjamas, flops, summer clothing (shorts and T-shirts), takkies, single bed duvet covers, flat fitted sheets, soft toys, hosts (who will be subject to a vetting process), stationery, board games and non-perishable food items.
“Although 2020 has been heavily defined by the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to social and economic disruptions, our message to the local community is that we wish that the treasures and traditions of Christmas could fill their hearts with hope and happiness.”
