Norwood detective secures murder conviction
MELROSE – Norwood SAPS applauded Detective Sergeant Skulile Ngonyama for his hard work which led to the conviction.
Norwood police congratulated Detective Sergeant Skulile Richard Ngonyama who followed through to secure a murder conviction following an incident that took place in June 2019.
Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha said that Ngonyama must be applauded for never resting and completing thorough investigations until the suspect was convicted.
A Norwood patrol van received a complaint of fighting on 18 June 2019 at 7.30pm, in the James and Ethel Gray Park in Melrose.
“Upon their arrival, police were approached by a group of homeless people who told them that a man was stabbed to death by a known suspect,” said Masotsha.
He said that it was alleged that two friends were drinking when the accused had a disagreement with the deceased. The accused allegedly moved from where they had been drinking and went to his bag, which was hanging on a tree, took out a knife and stabbed the deceased in the chest.
The man died on the scene and the suspect, known as Thabang Goodwill Khanyelithle Mabaso never ran away. Mabaso was previously arrested by Hillbrow police for theft and possession of presumed stolen property in 2004 and 2013.
Norwood SAPS thanks members of the public who came forward and assisted police as witnesses. Masotsha said the Johannesburg Regional Court found Mabaso guilty as charged.
