Strauss & Co hosts online auction featuring works of John Muafangejo

HOUGHTON – Noted art collector and scholar of Muafangejo, Orde Levinson is the sole consignor of the sale which is the first ever to be devoted to a single artist by Strauss & Co.

Strauss & Co in Houghton is excited to announce the sale of works celebrating Namibian printmaker John Muafangejo.

Comprising of almost 150 lots, the landmark once-off sale which opened online on 26 April, features over 100 examples of Muafangejo’s linocut prints and a large consignment of 36 original (but cancelled) lino blocks.

Senior art specialist at Strauss & Co Dr Alistair Meredith, who led negotiations for the consignment, said, “The sale entitled African Lion: John Muafangejo works from the Orde Levinson Collection offers a sweeping overview of the artist’s trailblazing career. The group of works on offer reveals a lifetime of patient, focused collecting, and gives print enthusiasts a rare opportunity to acquire examples from a collection of museum-grade quality, scope and historical weight.”

Muafangejo’s detailed compositions knit together diverse figures and text passages into striking pictographic scenes. His sudden death in 1987, at age 44, cut short a fluorescent career.

The auction ends on 3 May at 8pm.
