Helary rises as champion

LINKSFIELD – Royal Johannesburg and Golf Club champion Jules Helary recently won the Central Gauteng Closed Championships Trophy, following years of passionate training and commitment to the sport.

Passionate Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club player Jules Helary recently won the Central Gauteng Closed Championships Trophy and now has his sights set on the PGA Tour.

Helary, who trains at the golf club in Linksfield with dedication throughout the week, remembers his father taking him to the golf course when he was young. “But I never really got into it,” he said.

He explained it was only when his family moved to Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean when he was 12 years old, that he received good coaching and noticeably improved through playing once a week.

Helary now lives in Johannesburg and has been a member of the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club for the past five years. His golf has since gone from strength to strength. His big break came when he won the Club Champion trophy at the golf club. “Winning this event made me realise that I have what it takes to win.”

He also recently won the Central Gauteng Closed Championships Trophy – the best achievement yet in his career, he said. “Finishing 11 under par after three rounds is a great score. Playing at my home course gave me more confidence and all the work I have been putting in helped me win the trophy.”

He said he had also always looked up to his coaches. “They include my mental coach Mark Fairbank, who I have been working with for five years, my coach Gavin Levenson from South Africa, my coach Franck Michelle from Reunion Island and my gym coach, Renée Reinecke. I also want to thank my parents and my grandparents for providing me all the support that I need and always being by my side.”
