Norwood officials help stab victims
ORANGE GROVE – A heated brawl was thwarted by authorities on October 23.
Members of Norwood Community Policing Forum (CPF), CAP Security and Norwood police intervened when two men were fighting on the corner of Louis Botha Avenue and Osborne Road, Orange Grove at about 21:30 on October 23.
Evangelos Kostoglou, head of the Community in Blue patrollers, said they had been patrolling on Louis Botha Avenue when they saw a commotion. “Security WhatsApp groups warned of a threat in the area and the need to be cautious,” he said. “I think it wasn’t quite clear yet what was happening. When we got to the scene of the incident, we saw two men fighting.”
He described the scene of the fight, saying the men had stabbed each other, one using a pair of scissors. “The man had stabbed the other man in the head with the scissors.”
Kostoglou added that according to one of the men’s statements, the other had stolen from him. This was when he allegedly attacked him with the scissors. The other man reciprocated the attack and by the time security and CPF officials arrived on the scene, the men had to be pulled apart. Both had stab wounds in the head.
He said while waiting for medical intervention, the team’s trained first aiders had attended to the men, but this was only after they had managed to calm them down. After waiting for an ambulance for two hours, the men were eventually taken to hospital by a friend.
Kostoglou said they suspected they might have been under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.
“The success in controlling the fight and assisting the men with medical care while ensuring the violence didn’t escalate further, was an example of successful teamwork between officials.”
Norwood police were contacted for comment but had not replied by the time of publication.
