Impressive pavement gardens win

Parkview Residents’ Association launched their Summer Pavement Competition at the end of August.

The competition was held to motivate residents in Parkview and Greenside east to work alongside the association and help contribute to an even more beautiful suburb by creating neat pavements outside of residents’ properties.

Marketing and communication liaison for the association Caryl Kelly explained, “To participate, residents had to be residing in Parkview and Greenside east.

They were required to provide images of their pavement gardens along with their online entry. Judges then selected the top 10 gardens and visited those on November 6 to choose their top five pavement gardens.”

Kelly said judges were looking for pavement gardens that were eye-catching, original, neat, and tidy. They also took into consideration how water-wise the pavements were, if indigenous plants were used and whether the legally required community-friendly walkways for pedestrians along the pavements were in place.

The association was delighted to have Byron Thomas Properties on board as their main sponsor. “Thanks to their sponsorship, each of the five winners received an R3 000 cash prize as well as other sponsored prizes,” said Kelly.

Ward 87 councillor Bridget Steer as well as professional landscapers Tim Conradie, Tessa Reddy and Cheryl Langenegger and executive committee members of the association Philanie Jooste were the judges for the competition.

Carol Stier, Clare and Andrew Mitchell, Parkview Pre-Primary School, Jo Glover and Beatrice Fenn were the five winners.

Stier said, “I’m really pleased that my garden is bringing so much pleasure to the people of Parkview. I love coming home to it, especially at sunset when flowers are lit up in a golden glow.”
