Pavement competition brings out the generosity in community

This year’s Saxonwold and Parkwood Residents Association (Sapra) Pavement competition has shined a spotlight on the effort that homeowners put in beautifying their pavements.

Sapra secretary Marcelle Ravid said out of all the entries that were received, one was unfortunately disqualified due to the fact that there were ‘obstructions’ on the pavement which did not comply with the City’s bylaws.

“The three winners were thrilled with their prizes [provided by] Gioia Trattoria at the Zoo Lake Sports Club, and the Garden Shop, plus monetary prizes from Sapra, and [the winners have all paid it forward to various other entities.

The Garden Shop voucher is being given by the ‘most beautiful pavement’ winner to her garden service, as well as the voucher for a children’s party at Gioia,” said Ravid.

She added the winner of the ‘most improved pavement’ gave her prize to the Zoo Lake Users Committee to boost their coffers for their rehabilitation project.

“Such community spirit is a breath of fresh air,” said Sapra chairman Bill Haslam. “And we are hoping for even more entries in next year’s competition.”

Sapra appealed to residents to join the association and there was an easy registration and payment portal on their website. “The more members we have, the more we can do on the ground,” said Haslam.

Sapra’s recent projects included the repainting of 703 street names throughout the two suburbs, managed by Ilan Sparrius, one of the dedicated Sapra committee members. Haslam said, ”This upgrade was long overdue and we’ve had such a positive response. Ilan is a true Sapra hero and a great asset to the team.”
