Protection money gang arrested
NORWOOD – The gang has been harassing shop owners into paying a ‘safety allowance’.
Norwood Community Police Forum (CPF) has appealed to victims who were harassed by a gang demanding protection money to come forward.
This was after the CPF received notice that the gang members had been arrested by Norwood police on November 16.
CPF Chairman Wayne Preston said the gang had been going around harassing shop owners, demanding money in return for their safety and security for close to three years now.
“If any of you were affected by this, please visit Norwood’s detective branch or reach out to the CPF. It is important that we stand up against people who intimidate the community,” Preston advised.
Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha said, “I can confirm that five suspects have been arrested so far. Three were charged for trespassing and the other two for intimidation… The investigating officer opposed bail to all the suspects.”
He also appealed to members of the public who have been victims to come forward and give their statements to the police to gather more evidence.
Preston reassured individuals who came forward that they would remain anonymous and have their identities protected.
