Award-winning production targets youth

NEWTOWN – It is stylistically presented in order to grasp audience imagination and provide hard-hitting truths to people’s daily challenges.

The Market Theatre in Newtown will showcase the award-winning production of SIFU from January 18 to 30.

SIFU was announced the 2021 Zwakala Festival winner in December. The play is written by Bokapi Sebapu and directed by Lihle Nene.

The annual festival is sponsored by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Incubation Programme. It seeks to give fresh young talent a space to showcase their work. Their objective is to find and give space to emerging artists who shape the future narrative of the arts.

SIFU follows the journey of a gardener named Masenya. Through his journey, audiences get to experience a glimpse of the struggles he encounters as he navigates life.

The Pedi production seeks to transcend cultural and language barriers. It is stylistically presented in order to grasp audience imagination and provide hard-hitting truths to people’s daily challenges.

Festival director Mxolisi Masilela described the festival as an opportunity for young people to showcase their work and reflect on the daily challenges faced in their communities.

“This is the perfect platform of leveraging on young people’s love for the arts while also providing an outlet for their daily struggles,” said Masilela.

SIFU tickets are being sold at the discounted price of R60 in order to encourage young people to view the production produced by their peers.
