MATTHEW HOWARTH: I think our rights are substantial. If you take a look abroad at other countries, we as South Africans have a fair amount of rights. We got a marvellous country, we should consider ourselves grateful.
With Human Rights Day being celebrated today (March 21), we as a nation take time to value and appreciate our rights.
JANINE GOPAL: We have made progress since becoming a democracy in 1994, we do have access to more opportunities. In general, I think the standard of living has improved and that’s reflective of us being able to exercise our human rights, but there is still room for improvement.JONATHAN PILIE: I think in theory human rights are substantial although I am not entirely sure that everyone gets the basic human rights they deserve despite what the Constitution says. In theory, we should have the right to human rights whether they are implemented properly or not.WILLIS LEEU: In terms of human rights, we’ve come a long way and I believe we have a lot of freedom, but they’re all related to poverty; above all, human rights in South Africa are solid.

ENKE DE ROOS: It depends on which way one looks at it, but human rights are quite solid in South Africa.ZINHLE FANI: It’s all about having freedom as an individual in all aspects without being held back, not that we do have all those rights but we try to practise them.
