Community donates bread and spreads
Union of Jewish Women celebrates Mandela Day at Norwood Mall as they make sandwiches.
Sixty-seven minutes is all it takes to put a smile on someone’s face.
Union of Jewish Women (UJW) celebrated Mandela Day at Norwood Mall with a heart-warming event on July 17. Office and projects manager at UJW based in Percelia Estate, Vanessa Weltman said, “Our rainbow nation, young and old, came together to make over 3 300 sandwiches for those who need them most. [There was] an amazing turnout and incredible atmosphere.”
She said donations of bread and spreads poured in enabling UJW to distribute sandwiches to their soup kitchen at Hillbrow Community Health Centre, their Alex feeding scheme, Beit Emanuel feeding scheme in Hillbrow, Hotel of Hope, the White Squatter Camps, Witkoppen Clinic, Patricia’s home for abandoned children, St Luke’s Church and to jobless and hungry people at every corner.
Weltman said absolute strangers shared a smile and a few words with those next to them while making sandwiches. Learners were able to earn their community hours with 21 sandwiches amounting to one hour.
“We thank the Norwood Mall for hosting us; Beit Emanuel for joining us to make and distribute sandwiches, our fabulous public and special thanks to AA Bakery for the donation of 250 loaves of bread.
“As the icon Nelson Mandela said, ‘Remember that hope is a powerful weapon even when all else is lost’”.
