Monmouth hit 7 past Pirates in U18 hockey friendly

The visiting UK school hockey squad used their Johannesburg tour clash to test combinations and build vital match sharpness.

Monmouth’s U18 girls secured a 7–0 victory over Pirates in a friendly hockey match on the evening of October 23, after being invited to play the club during their South African tour.

The visitors made a strong start, scoring all three of their first-half goals in the opening quarter to take a 3–0 lead.

They continued to find the back of the net after the break, adding four more goals to complete a convincing win.

Monmouth coach Chris Marriott said his team identified opportunities in the opening period and worked to capitalise on them as the match progressed. Marriott added his team spotted early openings and worked to exploit them as the game unfolded.

Adapting to new styles

“I was super happy with the way the girls executed some important plays,” he said.

Marriott added that the tour had given his players valuable experience against teams with different playing styles, helping them improve their ability to adapt.

“The girls have definitely got better as the tour has gone by,” he said.

Captain Mali Price said the team enjoyed testing themselves against competitive South African opposition, benefiting individually and as a unit.

“Some of the younger girls in the team have shown that they are good enough to play first team hockey,” she said.

Price also praised the welcome the team had received from its opponents throughout the tour.
