Holy Family College lessens career choice stress
Professionals give learners a clearer understanding of different jobs at career days.
Rosebank Rotary and Holy Family College collaborated to host a career day with the aim to demystify career doubts on July 30.
Holy Family College headmaster, Franc Sobereira explained the importance of the day. “Career day is one of the highlights for learners in the school calendar as they make informed decisions about their academics. The most important part of this day is that learners get a clear sense of what career they are interested in because there are quite a few misconceptions about what a career entails.”

Clinical psychologist Khosi Jiyane said it was important for learners to put faces to the different careers. “Whenever I am invited to speak at such events, I do show up because it’s important to put a face to a term and profession which makes it real. It gives a black woman face to it and there’s relatability, and it was important in my own life as a student, because I have always known that I want to be a psychologist and a visit from one at my school confirmed it.”

Learner Bongiwe Radebe said she was thankful for the opportunity to be at the career day. “Although it is overwhelming to attend career days because there are so many professions, it was helpful because there were professionals from the career who explained each one in depth.”

A mechanical engineer, Dean Kennedy, said he enjoys attending career days and telling learners about his profession. “The closer you get to your degree, the easier it will become as you progress in high school as you also have to choose subjects in high school and make decisions for tertiary. I was lucky in high school, I had people sit with me and talk to me about mechanical engineering, but not a lot of people in our country have that privilege.”
