Small, medium and micro enterprises host a market day at Winston Ridge Park
Food, arts and crafts market held on December 3 and 4 at Winston Ridge Park was aimed at helping grow micro entities and small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMES) through effective and real enterprise development.
Head of non-profit company Impactful Initiatives Wongakazi Majola said such markets were beneficial to entrepreneurs and their businesses.
“Aside from enabling individuals and groups to create an income, they allow people to take control of their lives and bring earnings into their communities. The sector helps boost the economy of communities and plays a surprisingly large role in the nation’s economy.”
Majola added that the informal economy consists of roughly 2.5 million people and provided crucial wages for the country’s poorest and most vulnerable populations.
She noted that small enterprises were always faced with three major challenges, such as access to markets, lack of finance and capacity building.
“Impactful Initiatives is focusing on creating access to markets, thus addressing the first major hurdle.”
Majola added that one of the small enterprises at the market made leather handbags worth R1000.
