Three Men, three Victoria Crosses, and one rugby club
Mark Our Place tells the story of three remarkable men, in the hope that their achievements will never be forgotten.
Wanderers Club hosted the screening of the documentary Mark Our Place for its members on February 7 with the filmmaker Ashley Morrison present.
The Mark Our Place documentary tells the story of three rugby players who all came from the same club and went on to play internationally before being awarded military honours.
The documentary is centered around Robert Johnston, Thomas Crean, and Frederick Harvey’s lives as sportsmen and was produced in 2019.
According to the filmmaker, Morrison, he worked as a sports commentator and liked to pride himself on learning more about sports, and suddenly he found a story about three rugby players who played for the same club in Ireland.
“I thought to myself, how come I have never heard of them and thought to myself to tell their story so the world can know about these sportsmen who all went to play for Ireland and received the highest military honours for valour, the Victoria Cross.”
He states that the challenges he had in the production of the film were capital, getting the correct information, and moving around in different countries.
“We are still pushing for television stations to air the documentary and it has taken me by surprise that the film has been selected to show at 19 film festivals around the world.”
Morrison highlights that the documentary has been fortunate to have been picked for six different awards.
Dennis Jooste, a member of the Wanderers Club since 1968, attended the screening of the documentary.
Jooste said he is excited to have watched the fascinating human story involving three brave men with a common background.
“I have also been an interested member who loves rugby and the military, and this film highlighted an incredible story that I loved.”
