Future of Parkhurst Library remains uncertain as the city assesses damage
The city says no funding has yet been allocated for repairs or rebuilding of Parkhurst Library, leaving residents concerned about its future.
The future of Parkhurst Library remains unclear, as the City of Johannesburg is yet to allocate funding for repairs or rebuilding, while it assesses the magnitude of the damage.
The library was declared unsafe and closed to the public on July 23, following the ceiling collapse. A week later, on July 31, the roof of the facility also collapsed, leaving residents devastated.

Now, what is the next step? Communication specialist for the City of Johannesburg Virgil James explains what lies ahead.
“The next step is inspection of the building to determine whether the structure was impacted by the roof collapse, and if the structure can still be used in the refurbishment or repairs to the library.”
James confirmed that no funding has been allocated for the work. “However, a contractor was appointed by the city to assist with clearing the library and preparing a quotation for the repair work.”

Parkhurst Residents and Businesses Association (Praboa) chairperson Mike Rosholt said the association had not received any formal confirmation that no funding had been allocated. “We now need to see a clear and committed plan from the city for the future of the building.”

Rosholt said Praboa wanted the assessment of the structure to be conducted promptly, and its results made available to the community.
“The community needs to know whether the library can be safely repaired and reinforced, whether it needs to be rebuilt, or whether demolition is ultimately required.”
He said Praboa is worried that delays could result in further degeneration of the building and increase the cost and complication of restoring it.
“Praboa would like to see the city move beyond assessment and into implementation, with clear timelines, accountability, and communication with the community.”

The city further confirmed that the library’s 12 474 books are currently safely stored, with the slightest damage reported to the books. Electrical equipment and computers were removed before the roof collapsed and were not damaged.
As the library remains closed, community activities that are normally hosted by the facility are on hold. Residents have been advised to use Rosebank Library and Parkview Library as alternatives.
Rosholt said Praboa remained committed to working with the city to restore the facility.
“Our objective is to see the Parkhurst Library restored as quickly and safely as possible and to ensure that the community remains informed throughout the process.”
