Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner earns Protea colours through passion
Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner, Charlotte Schmid joined the Hip Hop team in 2022.
Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner, Charlotte Schmid danced her way to the International Dance Organisation and earned herself Protea colours while at it.
Schmid said getting Protea colours and representing your country was an honour, “When you have put so much effort and training hours in to get to that goal it is truly a great experience. “
The 12-year-old explained that her dance teacher at Ministry of Dance Studio asked her to join the hip hop team in 2022, but her main style of dance is performing arts (ballet, modern and jazz) but has enjoyed learning new styles of dancers.

She said representing South Africa at the IDO Hip-Hop World Championships in Poland last month was a goal she was working towards, “We qualified for IDO in 2022 but did not go, we then set our sights on qualifying in 2023. Being part of a team, the comradery and of course representing my country was an amazing experience that I will treasure forever.”
The dancer added that one of the main challenges was financing an overseas trip for a big team, a few fundraising events were held including crowdfunding and sponsorship events.
Schmid said she was able to juggle school and her extra mural activities, “I love school and I am ambitious. I also love sports and at school, I swim and play soccer and handball. I am very goal driven so I must remind myself to just keep going.”
The Grade 6 learner concluded that thinks dancing will always be a part of her life but was unsure if it would be her career one day. “I love choreographing dances so that is something worth exploring. But being an academic, I also like the idea of marine biology, but I’m only 12 so that may change.”
