Local canoers take to sprints to prepare for champs

Several local paddlers have been training hard for the upcoming SA Sprint Championships.

This is where a selection for the international team in all age groups, to represent the country takes place. The championships, this year, will be hosted in Germiston, at Victoria Lake Canoe Club, from March 23 to 25.

Michael Tilney from Rosebank enjoyed participation in the Sprint Trilogy, consisting of three races which took place on February 3 at Emmarentia Dam, February 24 as well as March 10 at Roodeplaat Dam.

This was able to provide training opportunities for sprinters to prepare for the South African Champs. Those who participated in all three of the series earned more points, and Michael Tilney finished 3rd overall in the Senior age category – an amazing achievement with strong competition.

Among the younger paddlers who participated and are ready for the upcoming South African Sprint Championships was Kaya Naidoo from Pridwin Primary School in Melrose. He took part in the 2nd race of the Trilogy series. This taught him a better understanding of how the sprints work.
