The exhibition conceived by the Consulate General intends to further develop the bridges between Portugal and South Africa, and celebrate the multiculturalism that exists amongst the Portuguese, Lusophone, and South African communities, as well as the experiences of the Portuguese and their descendants whose lives are embedded in this country.

Consul General of Portugal in Johannesburg, Graça Araújo Fonesca noted that the Visual Echoes art exhibition displayed a variety of artwork that portrayed and explained the Portuguese journey as a community in this country.

“We go as far back as remembering and recognising the navigators who marked our presence in our African continent. The artwork aims to show how Portuguese and African experiences and heritages have influenced the artwork on display from different experiences of our artists.”

Ambassador of Portugal to South Africa, José Costa Pereira noted our lives are a flow of different interactions we establish with people around us, and in our case, we have Portuguese artists living in South Africa which means we can achieve a fusion between two different cultural roots.

“Portuguese artists’ work was inspired by the people they met and the South African culture they have experienced.”
The Visual Echoes exhibition welcomed members of the public from March 1-10, between 10:00 -17:00.
