Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues reinstatement delayed
Assessments revealed the stormwater pipes in the excavation section are damaged and need to be repaired.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) confirmed to the publication on June 7 that the reinstatement on the corner of Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues in Craighall would be delayed.
JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “The reinstatement was initially scheduled for the end of May along with a bulk of reinstatements in Region B as part of the blitz programme. However, further assessments revealed that the stormwater pipes at the excavation section are damaged and need to be repaired or replaced.”
Peters-Scheepers noted that JRA’s regional teams would finalise the cost of repairs and attend to the damaged pipes urgently. Thereafter, the road will be reinstated.
“It is important to emphasise that the programme is rotational within the regions as reinstatements are a moving target, with roads being excavated daily for different services and emergency works. JRA has also appointed contractors that will supplement the capacity of our in-house teams.”
She added JRA continued to manage a backlog of reinstatements through a regional accelerated blitz programme to repair excavated roads for safer travel. This means that more teams and resources will be allocated in one region for an entire week to undertake bulk repairs of excavated roads.
